Governance
Driven by our purpose of “empowering Africa’s tomorrow, together ... one story at a time”, the Board, along with the Social, Sustainability and Ethics Committee and the Strategy and Sustainability Office, remain committed to overseeing, guiding and championing the Group’s sustainability strategy. The Committee continues to adhere to governance tenets set forth in King IV and the Companies Act.
At Absa, our commitment to be an active force for good permeates our operations. This commitment is part of our identity and a strategic directive, intersecting Group strategy, policies and practices.
Our strategy relies on the seamless integration of our sustainability objectives to create a sustainable future for Africa. This integration into the Group strategy and organisation has been tasked to the Group Strategy and Sustainability Office, with oversight from the Board and Social, Sustainability and Ethics Committee. Through structured governance processes and educational initiatives, Absa’s Board of Directors ensures that the organisation remains at the forefront of addressing climate-related risks and opportunities, aligning with the core principles and recommendations of the TCFD.
Several mechanisms govern employee conduct, including, but not limited to, the Absa Way Code of Ethics, Absa Values, Employment Relations Policy, Conduct Risk Framework, Fraud Risk Policy and Outside Business Affiliation Standard. Our Whistleblowing Policy provides a framework through which all colleagues (including temporary and seconded employees, contractors and consultants) can raise concerns. Progress on sustainability factors continues to inform accountability and incentivisation.
Corporate citizenship
At Absa, our corporate citizenship strategy, centred on financial inclusion through entrepreneurship, is fundamental to our mission to act as a force for good in everything we do. This strategy is an integral part of our sustainability framework, designed to address the socio-economic dynamics within our areas of operation and to generate sustainable impact.
Our corporate citizenship journey is guided by several strategic pillars for delivery. We aim to contribute meaningfully to the broader discourse on sustainability through our actions and by sharing best practice. Our drive for impactful and responsible corporate citizenship enables our strategic intent.
