Overview
As a Pan-African organisation, Absa’s Corporate Citizenship commitment is driven by the people it serves. We aspire to be a globally esteemed organisation that Africa can truly be proud of. Our Corporate Citizenship efforts consistently seek to respond to the socio-economic dynamics of the markets in which we operate, with specific consideration of local nuances. As we continue our efforts to make a meaningful impact in our communities, we’re dedicated to addressing challenges in our markets through scalable and innovative solutions. Our comprehensive participation spans grass-roots social-impact initiatives, including responding to natural disasters, creating environmental awareness, promoting activism through tree-planting initiatives and providing economic empowerment through financial literacy, youth skills development and employment, and entrepreneurship. Guided by our Purpose of empowering Africa's tomorrow, together ... one story at a time, our efforts in 2023 touched the lives of over 180 000 individuals across our ARO countries. This milestone highlights our unwavering commitment to tackling socio-economic challenges and creating positive and sustainable change within our communities.
Our Pan-African Vision
Our unified Pan-African vision centres on promoting financial inclusion through entrepreneurship. Uniform delivery across our markets is underpinned by four key strategic themes, namely:
- Financial literacy and education;
- Entrepreneurship and employability;
- Colleague volunteering; and
- Social impact response.
Financial Literacy and Education
Financial literacy is a critical enabler of economic empowerment. At Absa, we’re committed to ensuring that individuals from all walks of life have access to the knowledge they need to make informed financial decisions. Our Consumer Financial Education programme is designed to equip individuals with a strong foundation in personal financial management, ensuring that they understand key financial concepts and their rights and responsibilities as consumers.
Youth Education and Skills
Youth unemployment is a critical issue across Africa. At Absa, we believe that empowering young people with the right skills is essential for their economic future. Our flagship ReadytoWork programme is a cornerstone of this effort. It provides young people with access to world-class learning content that prepares them to be economically active.
Entrepreneurship
Entrepreneurship is a powerful catalyst for economic development and job creation, and Absa is committed to supporting the next generation of entrepreneurs across Africa. Our strategic focus on entrepreneurship is designed to align with our goals of promoting economic independence, driving innovation and fostering sustainable economic growth across the continent. One of our key interventions is the Young Africa Works initiative, which is focused on creating and expanding employment opportunities for young people.
Colleague Volunteerism
At Absa, we believe that our colleagues are our greatest asset in driving social change. Their proximity to communities and understanding of local needs enable us to make a meaningful difference through our corporate citizenship efforts. Colleague volunteering plays a crucial role in our ability to respond to the needs of the communities we serve. Our Colleague Volunteering programme is a unifying force across our markets, with significant contributions of volunteer hours from colleagues who are passionate about giving back.
