Absa has today launched its repositioned brand to the market signalling a shift to being a more deliberately customer-centric business with the new brand promise of ‘Your Story Matters’. The bank has set a clear trajectory to ensure that Absa’s entire suite of services and offerings lives up to this crucial pivot towards a more human-centred, empathetic banking service ethos across the continent. The refreshed brand strapline is part of the business’ ambitions to align their offerings and brand experience with their internal corporate purpose launched last year of ‘Empowering Africa’s tomorrow together, one story at a time’.

We’re inspired by your story this Women’s Month and beyond. That’s why we seek to support women and their voices across different sectors in our society. Through our various initiatives such as She’s Next, Women in Sport, Banking on Women, She Thrives and our Queen Modjadji TV series sponsorship, we work to empower women to decide how their story unfolds. Our “In my story…” campaign is dedicated to highlighting all the women who own their narratives every day.

Absa is wrapping up Women’s Month in true female fashion with the Women’s Month Event. In her story, she has power. Women inspiring and empowering women is the core of that power. We believe that the Red Lip is a timeless symbol of breaking barriers and women making their mark.

Learning from legends on the panel and staying connected to each other – that is the magic of this event. This is just the beginning; our commitment won’t stop here because Her Story will always matter.

Women in sport

Women in Sport

The Women in Sport Personal Branding workshop was a one-day event, held in Johannesburg at the Radisson Red that allowed for a masterclass execution as well as breakaway areas and an opportunity for guests to network over lunch.

We hosted 5 key Women in Sport guests and tailored the workshop to ensure inclusivity and delivered the best tools for empowerment.

Key media from SuperSport and Absa squad influencers such as Zinhle Masango and Samke Mhlongo were in attendance.

The masterclass included a panel discussion with Absa representatives Candice Thurston and Sadika Fakir as well as representatives from Flume, Sherilyn Douglas, and Nomfundo Mlaba from On Point PR with the Absa Squad Influencers.

Power FM Takeover

Absa is doing collaborations at its finest by co-hosting the #PowerBreakfast with Power FM. In her story, her voice is heard. Fierce women lead the way, discussing the many ways that empowering women can create change. We are committed to empowering the voices of women beyond Women’s Month. Why? Because empowering women is empowering a successful future.

Our brave Absa Executive, talented Queen Modjadji actress and fierce SheUntamed cyclist illuminated the path to the priority of empowering women, fostering healthier and sustainable communities and creating lasting change.

Visa She's Next

She's Next

Global payments leader, Visa, in collaboration with Absa, one of the largest diversified financial service providers in Africa, has rolled out its advocacy programme, She’s Next, across South Africa. The initiative, which spans across the globe, aims to create an inclusive and equitable environment for women-led businesses with networking, mentoring and funding opportunities.

Eligible women entrepreneurs from all industries and sectors in South Africa, are encouraged to apply for a chance to win a share of over R1 million worth of grant funding. In addition to the monetary prizes, the top applicants will receive training and capacity building sessions courtesy of Visa and its partner, Absa.

Queen Modjadji

Queen Modjadji, known as the Rain Queen, is the hereditary female monarch of the Balobedu people of South Africa, renowned for her reputed ability to control rain, a vital power for their agricultural society.

The Modjadji dynasty dates back to the 16th century, with each queen inheriting spiritual and political authority. Traditionally living in seclusion, the Rain Queens perform rituals to ensure rainfall, with their role deeply embedded in Balobedu culture. Despite modern challenges and succession controversies, the Rain Queen remains a symbol of female leadership and cultural heritage, attracting scholarly and public interest.

Women in Tech

GirlCode Annual Hackathon

As Absa, we are committed to driving diversity and this is just one of the ways in which we can play our part in elevating and advancing women and girls in technology careers.

The annual 30-hour hackathon, set to take place during the last weekend of August, promises to be an exciting event focused on sparking and nurturing an interest in coding among young women studying technology at university or college. What's even more thrilling is that this year, GirlCode has expanded its hackathon across the African continent for the first time.

This has provided Absa with the opportunity to directly support the talented young women who are participating in Botswana and Kenya by providing venues, tech mentors, and volunteers.

The hackathon's theme of exploring creative solutions that contribute to sustainable development aligns perfectly with our commitment to driving diversity and making a positive impact in the world.

1st March 2024

The 29th of February 2024 saw Absa join forces with Cars.co.za as the sponsor of the 7th annual Cars.co.za Consumer Awards. The awards celebrate excellence across the board with 13 distinct vehicle categories spanning various budgets and lifestyles. A panel of 20 judges evaluated each finalist through real-world reviews and extensive test drives. Charl Potgieter, ME of Absa Vehicle and Asset Finance and Sydney Mbhele, Group Chief: Marketing and Corporate Affairs, were in attendance of what proved to be a very stylish evening.

The Pinotage varietal, under the strategic guidance of the Pinotage Association, continues to receive international acclaim. The efforts of South African winemakers have resulted in Pinotage wines being recognised for their superior quality, capable of competing with any varietal from around the world.

The Pinotage Association has successfully organised and promoted several prestigious competitions, each contributing to the elevation of Pinotage's reputation on the global stage.
